For the reasons given under the section covering Sustainability, Grand Northern plan to use electric locomotives to haul the low floor ‘Piggyback’ wagon trains. We are in discussions with potential suppliers for new power units so the photo below is purely for illustrative purposes.
Ultra flat piggyback low-floor freight wagons would be used to transport the HGV’s. This type of wagon platform has been developed jointly by Hupac S.A and the Swiss Federal Railways, especially for use through the Gotthard Tunnel. Designed to transport 45 tonne HGV’s, the low floor arrangement is such that the Woodhead tunnel could accommodate the largest lorries in twin track configuration.
